Kolliphor ELP

Kolliphor® ELP is a non-ionic oil-in-water emulsifier and/or solubilizer for sensitive active ingredients. Kolliphor® ELP, a purified grade of Kolliphor® EL was specially developed for sensitive active ingredients, as the higher purity was found to improve their stability. It is used as a non-ionic oil-in-water emulsifier and/or solubilizer. This established product demonstrates very good compatibility with other ingredients, and can be used with fat-soluble vitamins and essential oils, or as a purified solubilizer in paclitaxel formulations. Kolliphor® ELP is particularly well suited to parenteral dosage forms, as it increases stability of injectable formulations.

Chemical name: Polyoxyl castor oil
Former trade name: Cremophor® ELP
Chemical nature: Like Kolliphor® EL, Kolliphor® ELP is a nonionic solubiliser made by reacting castor oil with ethylene oxide in a molar ratio of 1 : 35. This is followed by a purification process. Description: Unlike Kolliphor® EL, Kolliphor® ELP is a white to yellowish paste or cloudy liquid. It has to fulfill more exacting requirements with regard to water content, potassium ions and free fatty acids, particularly ricinoleic, oleic and palmitic acids.
CAS-No: 61791-12-6
Regulatory Status: Kolliphor® ELP meets the requirements of the current Ph. Eur. monograph Macrogolglycerol ricinoleate. It also conforms with the latest edition of the USP/NF mongraph Polyoxyl 35 Castor Oil with the exception of the viscosity. The viscosity differs from that specified in the USP/NF because Kolliphor® ELP has a much lower water content than Kolliphor® ELP.
Solubility: Kolliphor® ELP forms clear solutions in water and also dissolves in a wide range of organic solvents, such as ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, toluene and xylene.
